that the world of technology is preserved and
accessible for future generations - especially in
this day and age. Of course, everything can be read
up quickly on a smartphone. But standing in front
of a space shuttle and realizing how small you
actually are, ascending to the Concorde and only
being able to guess what it would be like to
fly supersonically with this super „bird“, taking
selfies on the wing of a jumbo jet or simply seeing,
experiencing and understanding the advances in
automotive engineering over the last 150 years in a
hall - no search engine on the internet will be able
to explain that to you. We are convinced of that.
And thanks to some club members, we have been
able to display many highlights at our museums.
There is always someone who knows someone.
The fact that the museums are self-supporting
through donations, entrance fees and, above all,
membership fees is also a source of pride,
especially for our museum‘s president,
Hermann Layher.
The museums are growing
Over the last few years, a number of exhibit
highlights have come together - a collection that
is one of its kind in the world of musems. Just
one year after the opening, we received two
remarkable exhibits in Sinsheim that could
not have been more different: the fastest land
vehicle in the world, The Blue Flame, and the
Mortier dance organ. This was followed by steam
locomotives „Crocodiles“, airplanes, such as the
Junkers Ju-52, vintage cars, such as compressor
Mercedes, Ferraris or Bugattis, agricultural and
military exhibits as well as Formula 1 bolides. So
it was only a matter of time before the spacious
area was filled. New premises were needed. In
general, the success of the Sinsheim museum
allowed it to constantly expand. Having found
what we were looking for in Speyer, we settled
on the area around the historic Liller Halle - the
foundation for Technik Museum Speyer had been
laid. In August 1990, the extensive renovation and
restoration work began; after all, the more than
100-year-old hall itself is a remarkable exhibit.
The opening of Technik Museum Speyer
followed on April 11, 1991.
In order to become its sister museum in
Sinsheim, the first major exhibit followed for
Speyer: the German Navy’s U-9 submarine.
Thanks to it, the museum can claim to be one of
the southernmost submarine bases in Germany.
Even today, the former crew meets regularly to
maintain the submarine, which weighs several
tons. The coming years remained exciting for the
young Technik Museum: a Chinese locomotive,
the Qian-Jin, enriched the exhibition. After
the IMAX 3D cinema opened in Sinsheim,
the preparations for the IMAX Dome cinema
followed in Speyer. After years of renovation,
we were able to open Hotel Speyer at Technik
Museum Speyer including the Caravan Park
