Towboat Glarus

An interesting item of the maritime exhibition in Speyer is the towboat »Glarus«. The ship was built in 1907 by the Schiffs- und Maschinenbau AG in Manheim. She was originally powered by a steam engine and later refitted with a 750 hp Deutz diesel engine. The towboat is 30 meters long, 6 meters wide and weighs about 108 tons. The vessel was used for many years for pulling inland ships and pushing push boats. The “Glarus” has a special relationship to the Technik Museum Speyer since in 2004 she was used for towing the house boat of the famous pop group Kelly Family on the Rhine to Speyer. In May 2014, after more than 100 years of service, she was retired together with her last captain, Ferdinand Fendel.
